Biography

“I knew a wise-guy who used to make fun of my painting, but he didn’t like the Abstract Expressionists either. He said they would be good painters if they could only keep the paint as good as it is in the can. And that’s what I tried to do. I tried to keep the paint as good as it was in the can.”

Frank Stella, 1968

This ia my grandfather, Oscar Hugo Kompst, a paint-mixer of German descent, who worked most of his life at the Ault & Winborg Corporation in Cincinnati. In the early 1930s he posed for Winold Reiss (1886-1953). As a child I often visited the Union Terminal train station where this mosaic was installed in the main concourse. I remember imagining how it must have looked as a bright dye began flowing into a vat of white base, the pigments swirling to create a new color.
