As is evident in this detail, the white background in the original painting just peaks through.
Reversing the coloring of the foreground objects (initially bright hues) and background (initially white) will change how the painting is read.
I illustrate with this suggestive video clip, using orange blocks to stand in for the irregular forms. A pair of diverging oscillators will slowly modify both the object and the background coloring, moving their purities in opposite directions.
in my piece, the white background will be replaced with vertical stripes, each matching the hue of the objects on top of it. Their purity value will be set initially to produce the uniform background of white in Thomas’ painting.
While the colored objects in the original painting are transitioning to white, the parts that are initially peaking through as white background will shift gradually to brighter and brighter hues. This will produce vine-like colored strands, suggesting another autumn drama.
Additional movements might be added to:
- pan across the larger horizontal work
- suggest an autumnal breeze
- accent rhythms of the soundtrack
